Asli Mohamed

Asli and her family of four are the proud owners of a sustainable farm in Belize. Seven years ago Asli and her husband made the move to Belize, looking for a quiet place to raise their family. The move was a part of their plans to have a “decentralised life”. A decentralised life as Asli explains it is one where she and her family seek to achieve a greater level of personal freedom and security with “the ultimate optionality and freedom of movement”. Having had the experience of a few places to call home, in a number of countries, each with its own advantages, this is her family’s version of risk management or ultimate freedom.

Asli has first-hand experience as to what political risk is and the need to have freedom of movement given her experience of being a refugee as a child, fleeing Somalia during its civil war and eventually being raised in London. These experiences had a tremendous impact on her outlook on life, especially as a Black woman, raising multicultural children. The search for a safe place to “just be” was top on the list, which landed her family in Belize!

With Asli’s journey abroad having started decades ago in London, she says “There’s been a lot of figuring it out as we go”. It’s not all been smooth sailing by any means! But as a family we’ve learnt tons along the way. Abundance is more important than money to us, it is the ultimate blessing, we're just getting started here in Belize, our farm is full of abundance with all that nature brings.

Last year, Asli began hosting homesteading retreats where people can take a break, learn valuable self-sustainability skills, and experience the lovely country of Belize.”
